The Blessing of Being Human

From a translated lecture by Ilchi Lee

(Thank God for that I am a Human)

What is your body’s past? What were you in a previous life? In our previous lives, we were an egg and a sperm. That is what we were in the past. What, then, is the future of the body? Ultimately, we will grow old and die. Then, with neither soul and nor emotion, we will be corpses, and nothing else. That is the future of our bodies. We have emotions and a soul now because we are alive. After becoming a corpse, though, we have neither. Where do they go? There’s no reason to worry about your birth, anyway. That’s passed, and you can’t change it now. Our births are not something we can do anything about. It’s fate. We didn’t choose our parents and we didn’t choose to be black or white, either. Our coming into this world had nothing to do with our own choices. That’s why the future is important. We can choose how we will live and how we will die, and what we will be like after we die, too. You can choose how you will live, how you will die, and whether you will be cremated or buried in the ground after you pass on. Animals can’t choose these things. It is truly a blessing to be born a human being.
