WHY HUMAN TECHNOLOGY

Ilchi Lee tell us that technology is derived from the Greek, meaning “study or skills.” Printing presses, steam engines, radio and television changed the course of our past. Today biotechnology and malformation technology are shaping the course of our future. But note that these technologies impact human experience through the filter of systems or specialists. However well-intentioned they may be, they are no substitute for individual judgment and responsibility.
What is needed are simple skills to upgrade life experience, that the individual herself can use responsibly without recourse to machines or institutions. Call these skills Human Technology (HT). Human Technology is a toolkit for self-reliant management of the core issues of human life. The core issues are health, sexuality, and life purpose. I contend that the skills of HT are the most important technology of all. They are the technologies of life itself. They lead to greater self-mastery and authentic living.
Let me share a story. A few months ago I met with a journalist who worked for a major national newspaper and was writing an in-depth story on health trends. While interviewing me, she mentioned she was suffering from severe and frequent bouts of gastrointestinal pain. She said that it actually prevented her from eating at least two days a weekâparticularly when she was on deadline. She related that she’d suffered with these symptoms for over three years. When I asked about managing the condition, her reply was that she simply took pills.
I pictured her modern, fast-paced, fully wired office with the latest laptop at her fingertips, just a keystroke away accessing a mountain of health information. Multiple phones lines could connect her to dozens of health authorities. I imagined her ease and adeptness at using any one ot these technologies.
