Woman with scoliosis teaches others healing power of yoga

When she was only 12, Jennifer Heinstadt began a lifelong journey of strengthening her mind-body-spirit while facing the condition of scoliosis that took her through a number of different holistic medicines, which she tried as an alternative to surgery, according to The Reisterstown Patch

Heinstadt ultimately decided on yoga, which she found offered her the most relief. She trained with an experienced yogi to learn the art of the exercise and now has two certificates in yoga. She didn't stop there – Heninstadt decided to share her newfound knowledge by opening a yoga studio that could specifically focus on back pain.

"I've had back problems since the 1980s," student Nancy Cole told the news source. "I love Jenn [my instructor] and the yoga… Jenn combines the active stretching with the more passive stretching in the session so you get a work out without being worn out."

Scoliosis is a disorder that causes an abnormal curve in the spine and is approximately two times more common in girls than it is in boys, according to MedicineNet.com. It is a hereditary disease. Symptoms include shortness of breath or chest pain.
